Yesterday, we were learning how to make decimals during a demi-pipe. We had some pretty in depth conversations about how we add and subtract decimals. There were definitely conflicting ideas about one question in particular, so I asked the students to find the answer for homework and explain how they got it. Here are some examples of how to add and subtract decimals.......

To add and subtract decimals, follow these steps:

- write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up
- Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length
- Then add using an addition algorithm, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer
